The Children's Museum of Indianapolis Quote

"Families could easily spend two days exploring this Indianapolis behemoth, frequently ranked the best children's museum in the United States... in most cities its signature Dinosphere exhibit would be an entire museum unto itself, but this is just one of many major exhibitions." - Larry Olmsted, Forbes.com

Art & Architecture: Fireworks of Glass

Comprised of more than 3200 individually blown glass pieces, Dale Chihuly’s five-story Fireworks of Glass sculpture is a permanent artwork installed in the middle of the Museum’s multilevel central core ramp.

RATIO led the design team that installed the sculpture and a floating glass display ceiling. The ceiling acts as a platform for the sculpture and is supported from the existing ramp structure without columns to the lower level.

Below the colorful ceiling, RATIO and the Children’s Museum exhibit designers created an innovative hands-on glassblowing exhibit and viewing space for Museum visitors.

Schaefer Planetarium and Space Object Theater

As the focal point of a new exhibit called “Beyond Spaceship Earth,” The Children’s Museum asked RATIO to completely redesign the campus’ existing planetarium into an immersive, ultramodern theater experience.

Built within the planetarium’s original footprint, the new theater includes a state-of-the-art spherical projection screen, built-in alcoves for artifact display and an automated hydraulic lift capable of raising large objects (such as crew capsules or satellites) ten feet into the space. A new exterior metal skin completes the design with whimsical, decorative “space station” features.

The project was designed and completed on an extremely tight schedule, due to a scheduled opening night gala and the exhibition’s centerpiece Mercury Space Capsule being on loan from another institution.
