The Chatham Community Library was a collaborative project between Central Carolina Community College, Chatham County and the Friends of the Chatham Library. As such, the library’s architectural design needed to respond to the many needs of the diverse user groups who worked together to make the project a reality.
Recognizing that Chatham County has a vibrant art scene, the building’s architecture incorporates art created by several local artists including a mural in the children’s program area; custom fences and bicycle racks; and tiles for two fireplace hearth features. In addition to creating a comfortable ambiance both inside and outside the facility, the specially commissioned art installations also reinforce the library as a community anchor. Lastly, a soaring arc roof and a wall of windows catch natural light and illuminate both the quiet reading and group activity areas.
