Dede Plaza was originally developed in conjunction with the Hulman Memorial Union (also designed by RATIO in 1987). The plaza is the primary open space on the Indiana State University campus.
ISU engaged RATIO to update the 25-year-old plaza in time to commemorate the University’s sesquicentennial in 2016.
A pergola on the east edge of the plaza contains the space, frames views into the plaza and provides shaded seating opportunities. The pergola columns’ brick and limestone detailing ties the structure aesthetically to the Union building and the campus as a whole. Decorative paving lends the appropriate level of detail for a space designed to respond to the human scale.
The 2016 redesign included elevating the fountain to serve as a stage, expanding lawn areas for seating and new pavement.
