One of the primary goals of Indiana State University’s 1986 campus master plan included the beautification and pedestrian-friendly development of several gateway intersections leading into campus. RATIO has had the opportunity to develop several of these gateways, including the intersection of 7th and Cherry Streets.
RATIO’s design for this important entry to campus consists of masonry walls, columns designed to match other existing campus gateways, and custom light fixtures to adorn the top of each column. The surrounding space has been designed to accommodate tents and other functions associated with the City’s annual arts fair.
To the east and north of the gateway, RATIO created a plaza that celebrates Terre Haute’s location on the historic National Road. The plaza’s narrative graphics depict the general route of the National Road and US 40, the history of the Road and the influence that the route has had on Terre Haute and the University today.
