Recognizing a growing demand for modern on-campus housing, Indiana University engaged RATIO to design a complex of apartment-style residences for upperclassmen. To remain competitive with an expanding off-campus market for upscale accommodations, the University sought to reinvent the student housing experience by including amenities that enhance productivity, technological connectivity and a sense of community.
Indiana University’s Union Street Center offers its 827 residents a village-like atmosphere of seven buildings clustered to form quadrangles that reinforce a sense of community. The apartments provide a range of housing options with one-, two-, and four-bedroom units.
Each apartment comes equipped with air conditioning, a full kitchen and appliances, wired and wireless campus internet and cable TV, eco-friendly washer/dryers, and fully-furnished living rooms and bedrooms. In addition to common areas and study lounge spaces on each level, exercise facilities and recreation spaces encourage students to build community with their neighbors. Union Street Center also features a conference facility with a modern, day-lit classroom and meeting rooms.
Designed for LEED certification, Union Street Center incorporates sustainable design principles including the use of daylight in common areas, classrooms and meeting rooms, a green roof, native plantings, energy-efficient appliances, and low VOC paints and adhesives.
