SIUC LiveDesign text

LiveDesign in Action

Over the course of 12 months, RATIO met with seven departments, faculty and deans, student groups and even the local public radio/tv station to develop a new program for this building, which was outdated and fragmented from decades of renovations. An effort of this scale was made necessary by the complexity and size of the building, and the numerous, diverse users sharing space under one roof.

LiveDesign sessions allowed RATIO designers to determine what was most needed by the University, including a Convergence Media Lab; a centralized, collaboration-focused suite for Registered Student Organzations; and one main building spine to simplify circulation and provide access to all of the building's major theaters and public spaces.

These sessions even covered details such as technology needs and furniture choices.

RATIO presented 10 overall schemes to the different user groups, which led to conservations about space adjacencies, efficient collaboration and how the project would be phased.

Once a scheme was finalized, additional LiveDesign meetings helped decide material options and interior finishes, landscaping and interaction with the outdoors, and contextual integration into the surrounding campus.
