Arguably no area of higher education has experienced as much recent change as mass communications. In response, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale sought to renovate its Communications Building, originally built in 1962, that housed both the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Mass Communications and Media Arts.
RATIO’s resulting design redefines the nature of an education in communications and advances the theme of multidisciplinary collaboration between both departments and faculty/students, with a converged new media lab and newsroom serving as the primary showpiece.
The project will touch a variety of spaces and departments including the 500-seat McLeod Theatre, broadcasting facilities for WSIU Public Radio and Public Television, offices and production of the Daily Egyptian student newspaper, and the departments of Speech Communication, Theatre, Radio/Television/Digital Media, Journalism, Cinema/Photography and Broadcast Services.
A multi-phased approach will address the needs of all six different departments without the need for university swing space.
