In seeking a new world headquarters, Emmis Communications moved to consolidate five radio stations, two news services, Indianapolis Monthly magazine, and the company’s corporate offices into a single facility.
A primary design objective was to create a distinct and innovative identity for Emmis and to fit within the historic context of Monument Circle, Indianapolis’ famed civic space and most prominent address. Maintaining individual identities for Emmis’ publishing, radio, and corporate entities was also a priority.
RATIO used architectural details throughout the design to respond to neighboring structures while reflecting a “communications” theme unique to Emmis: a custom metal trellis above the entry mimics the varying AM radio wavelength; a soaring atrium creates a dynamic civic space for promotions and employee interaction; and two street-level radio studios showcase Emmis’ state-of-the-art digital broadcasting facilities to the public.
