Understanding the value of transportation connections to placemaking and economic activity, the Town of Normal envisioned this project as a catalyst for long-term downtown redevelopment and revitalization.
The multimodal transportation facility would also include a new Town Hall, providing a welcoming environment for the public and increased efficiency for the employees while accounting for future projected growth.
A prominent building intended to serve the citizens of Normal for generations, sustainability and longevity were chief concerns in the selection of decor, materials, technology and local art.
The Uptown Station multimodal transportation center offers numerous connections to transportation options including Amtrak passenger rail, intercity bus, local mass transit, car, intra-community shuttles, taxis, airport shuttle service and bike and pedestrian amenities. An attached garage provides convenient parking access and electric vehicle charging stations.
The building also houses the City of Normal’s municipal offices, town archives, City Council chambers and multi-purpose rooms available for public use.
Designed to meet LEED Silver certification, the new facility is one of the most energy efficient public buildings in downstate Illinois. A significant element of the revitalization of downtown Normal, Illinois, the project has become a key driver of continued mixed-use redevelopment in Normal’s central business district.
RATIO’s graphics team worked with Wilkenson Brothers to enhance the facility’s interior space with a custom Art Deco-inspired terrazzo floor inlay that measures 16 feet across and showcases the different modes of transportation Uptown Station supports.
Inspired by the users who will define the building’s culture over time, the artwork will give patrons a unique understanding of the Town of Normal’s distinct character.
